Hello everyone, finally got to updating some information on this one. Construction is delayed on this one on account of my dog getting a hold of the bottom hull and ripping it apart. The Sherman no match for the mighty Whoodle. Waiting on a second identical kit to come in so I can rebuild the lower hull. Also stay tuned for a destroyed Sherman diorama coming soon...

Ouch 🙂 I long ago learned to close the door to my hobby room when I'm not actually there, after a cat decided to sleep on top of a Matchbox Bismarck I was building a seascape base for.

My basement is my hobby room but I have boxed everything now so things are more secure!

And with the mud effects and a coat of matte varnish this puppy is done. Pushed myself on this one to try new techniques, two tone chipping, dedicated mud and dust effects from AK. Lessons learned: AK spray can varnish interacts with graphite from a pencil and turns it completely black. I had highlighted all the edges with graphite for a metal effect and the varnish knocked it down completely and left me with some black stains. Had to dry brush gun metal over the edges to get some of that metallic look back. Also it totally lost a fender and headlight from its encounters with enemy tanks and definately not because of a wayward finger. This one was fun to build, usual Tamiya quality, fit was good, minimal cleanup of parts, and really happy with the results.

Kit went together really well, there was a couple of confusing bits in the instructions, particularly about the different options and substitutions of parts, but nothing too complicated. Pieces required minimal cleanup. Biggest issue I had is the decals in my set were terrible in my version of the kit. They fell apart and ripped in the water when moistening them, and when placing them on the model. Had to go through a couple different decals on the sheet just to get some good ones.

Lighter chipping was added using a lighter version of the basecoat (Dunkelgelb mixed with Deck Tan), darker chipping was added with Red Brown (XF-64) and steel chips where added with AK new steel. Dirt effects where two blends of pastel chalks ground up and pin wash was done with blank and burnt umber oil paints thinned down.

And she is finally done! Added dirt effects on the outside of the side skirts, added graphite details to the metal and chipped edges, and added the sprocket wheels, road wheels and idler wheels, the tracks and the side skirts on to the model. I then sprayed it with matte varnish. This was my second model in my return to the hobby after the Panzer II, and first with this extensive weathering. I think I was too heavy handed with the weathering on this one and the chipping was a little messy. I think I will go with brush chipping for the Churchill I have started to get more control compared to the sponge chipping. This was a lot of fun, learned a lot along the way, and I welcome any feedback or critiques anyone has, just go easy on me!

This was my first serious model kit in about 25 years, so I took it easy with this one. Kit went together smoothly, its a really good cheap and easy kit now to get started in the hobby with! There was minimal cleanup on the parts, and everything went together well. Pin wash was done with thinned oil paints, dust effects and soot where added with chalk pastel pigment. Soft graphite stick was also used for a bit of wear and tear. Kept the weathering pretty understated as I didnt wanted to keep my first model simple.
