After Crusader, 4th Royal Tank Regiment was rebuilt. Any surviving Matildas were swapped out for new Valentine Mk II tanks with the exception of close support Matildas armed with 76mm cannons used as HQ tanks firing smoke and HE rounds. The large yellow 8 on the turret is the tank number within the squadron. 4th RTR was well known for painting large tank numbers on the sides or turrets of their tanks.2
