Howl's Moving Castle

Incredibly, I've somehow managed to complete a piece in the last 6 months! This is an 3D print of Howl's sculpted by Pandasforge on Cults. It's printed at roughly 60% of the original file size in order to fit on my printer's build plate and stands about 7" tall to the top of the crow's nest. As this was one of the very first things I ever printed about 14 months ago, there were a bunch of failures and it didn't fit together super well, but I guess that just adds to the ramshackle aesthetic.

This piece sat on my bench primed and ready for paint for almost a year because I couldn't figure out how to paint it in the same style as the Ghibli animation. Recently, drybrushing and slapchop have become very popular, and so I decided to try these two techniques on this.

I primed in black, then undercoated using Tamiya Purple in the shadows and Tamiya Flat Blue in the "highlights". The blueish steel of the turret was then drybrushed with successive layers of blues, blue-greys, and light grey, and then given two coats of a grey-blue wash I mixed myself. The houses were drybrushed with successive layers of tans, biege, and finally off-white. These were not washed in order to give them a flat, almost chalky surface to mimic stucco. The roofs are done in Vallejo Cavalry Brown, then mixed and highlighted with Vallejo Orange Brown.

The rust areas were the most challenging. I used a basecoat drybrush of Reaper Auburn Shadow. This was very strong and not so much a drybrush as a thin undercoat, making sure to avoid the areas of deepest shadow where the purple would still show through. To simulate running rust streaks, I then used a 00 brush to paint diluted vertical lines through, over and under the basecoat (these do run into the purple shadow areas somewhat). I then used a bunch of different Reaper oranges and browns in lighter tones to add successive highlights, being sure only to drybrush in vertical downward strokes. Finally, to mimic the brightest highlights, I drybrushed Vallejo Light Yellow on to the most prominent features. Mossy areas near the bottom of the hull are just vertical swipes of Vallejo Medium Olive and highlighted with Vallejo Light Olive.

I added guy wires to the crow's nest using embroidery floss and steam to the smokestacks with pillow stuffing. The base is a plastic disc, textured with Vallejo mud effects, painted, and then covered with flocking. I mounted that on a cheap wooden coaster (flipped upside down) and then mounted that on a circular steel ball bearing mount, so the entire thing can be swiveled around.

Really happy with how this turned out. Enjoy!
