Meteor Shower (Part 1)
1
July 2, 2023Box art2
July 4, 2023Bit of a rinse as usual, not sure if it's even needed nowadays, more habit than anything else.3
July 4, 2023Dry brushed the interior of the tub to bring some detail out on the off-chance you'll be able to see it at the end.4
July 5, 2023Blast from the past: don't have and couldn't find the acrylic version of 109 WWI Blue, so dug out my enamel, just like when I was a kid 🙂
(And figured sod it, might as well use the metalcotes too)5
July 7, 2023This is my 1:48 bang-seat, complete with arm rests...6
July 7, 2023... but no, despite being the sturdy 1:48 one, between removing the spine part of the chair from the sprue and then looking at it again 5 seconds later, I'd managed to lose an arm!
Bodged one with a bit of offcut sprue.7
July 7, 2023My thinking is, from outside of the cockpit tub once assembled, it'll look fine. Disaster averted.
Still love to know how I managed to knock that bit off!8
July 7, 2023Nearly time to assemble the tub.9
July 9, 2023Very satisfying click as the seat went in.10
July 13, 2023Decided to try and be clever, attaching the gun covers with magnets (hopefully). Nearly came a cropper by forgetting an ancient Confucian wisdom*.
* Don't f*** about with Superglue and magnets ?11
July 13, 2023Those cross beams went into position beautifully. Have to say, this is a bloody clever and well designed kit, and a pleasure to build.12
July 14, 2023Showing off the metal work before it all gets sealed up. The exhaust pipes also snapped in with a comforting "click".13
July 14, 2023It's pegging time!14
July 14, 2023Not wishing to cast aspersions on Airfix's calculations but I'm going 5g more than they've recommended, I don't want a tail-sitter doing wheelies.
Of course, iron weights and the aforementioned neodymium magnets have already been arguing as I did a dry fit... sigh.15
July 15, 2023Weighted cockpit tub fitted - another satisfying and reassuring click as it went in.16
July 15, 2023Fuselage sealed up.17
July 16, 2023That snapped together nicely. Gap between wing top surfaces and fuselage is a bit bigger than I'd like/expect, but not sure if filler would actually make more of a mess!18
July 17, 2023Looking a bit more plane shaped19
July 17, 2023Distinct lack of engines for now, this is where the Big One and Little One will have to part company for a bit.20
July 17, 2023Flying in formation, Little One doing a good impression of being further away.
Big One doing very well considering it has no engines.21
July 20, 2023Two Rolls-Royce RB.37 Derwent engines, some assembly required.22
July 21, 2023Two Rolls-Royce RB.37 Derwent engines - think they've come out quite nicely. So many different metal finishes in there, adds a lot of texture and interest. Citadel washes impressing me too.23
July 24, 2023One Derwent in the nacelle..24
July 24, 2023... other Derwent on a trolley. Think I'm going to streak that trolley a bit (grime/oil/rust) as it's looking a bit too clean.25
July 24, 2023Another view of Derwent-to-go26
July 24, 2023Last one, honest.27
July 24, 2023Cameras and the complicated nose wheel / camera mount thingy. Bit worried about how strong it is, given all the weight I packed in on the other side of that bulkhead!28
August 7, 2023As Sun Tzu never said, precut masks never survive first contact with the model... but I'm at least consistent across the two!
It occurred to me as I masked these two that I'm building a scale model of a scale model 🙂 ... which is a two-edged sword as they each help explain some fits and positions on each other, but I also want to get them as similar as possible.29
August 7, 2023First coat of Humbrol 163 green on... oh, and in the process of wrestling with the masks I've, ah, "disassembled" two legs of undercarriage30
August 26, 2023Slight disagreement between 1:48 & 1:72 - ground crew will be confused!31
August 26, 2023Underside started (stencils still to go)32
August 26, 2023Post side decals and dozens of tiny stencils on.33
September 1, 2023Meteor all done! Very happy with the shiny canopy.34
September 1, 2023Peek-a-boo starboard Derwent...35
September 1, 2023... there it is.36
September 1, 2023Peek-a-boo starboard Hispano Mk V cannon...37
September 1, 2023... there they are!38
September 1, 2023Spot the camera in the window.39
September 1, 2023Loving the aluminium effect inside the wheel wells even if I do say so myself.40
September 1, 2023Family photo with little brother.41
September 1, 2023Home at last, in display case.
