Yesterday I found my new favorite wash. Back in the day I used to use Citadel Devlan Mud (black and clear hard plastic "tins" ) which was a very universal in shade and use. Then they changed formula and bottle and it was less usable and harder to get (where I live). I experimented with lots of stuff but everything had disadvantages and did not meet the shade of the GW paint ... now I tried Tamiyas Dark Brown wash expecting kind of brown but in reality it is a very good grey-brown shade and will be working on many surface colours ... here are the u/c doors of my Fw 190A-2 painted Gunze RLM 02 with Tamiya Dark Brown panel line wash

Almost there. Just a few bits n pieces left to do like antenna wire and u/c indicators... I have tried the new UV cut flat clear from Gunze and I like it... works like H20 maybe even a tad more flat when thinned with the levelling thinner (I found it to viscous out of the bottle) ... which gives H20 a slight semigloss touch

BTW the spiral decal was a challenge ... which I did not fully meet.

Just curious are you talking about Tamiya's Panel Line Accent Color bottles?

If so, I guess, in theory, one could mix between the afaik three existing colors (black, brown and gray).

Well, IMHO the panel line colors are enamels else you are probably right. Still I like the Dark Brown mix and will keep using it. Suum cuique if you like to make your own mixes, please do so. This is not meant to advertise the stuff, but just an observation about it being very similar to the former GW Devlan Mud in hue and handling.

My impression of this stuff is so so, but I am no expert. I think I have learned, that it looks the best, if only applying it once, else it might end up looking ugly. Adding the stuff more than once, afaik dissolves the existing enamel paint (the wash).

I am using (mostly) acrylics for painting thus enamel washes are no problem. Normally I am not using different hues of washes over each other. If I want to I am mixing it on the model. BTW I am talking about wash for a cockpit or a similar small area on the model. For the whole model I prefer a sludge wash with water paint umber and black...
