CH-47D Chinook
Operator: 4th Aviation
Location: Butts Army Airfield, Fort Carson, Colorado (USA)
Timeframe: 1991-1993
Personal Interest:
This model represents the CH-47D Chinook heavy lift helicopter operated by 4th Aviation during my tour at Fort Carson. Capable of speeds up to 200 mph, the Chinook was well-suited for use as an infantry troop transport. The Chinook was also a prime mover of towed artillery. Because live fire drills often started brush fires on the Fort Carson reservation, CH-47Ds were used to carry water for fire-fighting operations.
Other operations:
In 1994-95, the CH-47D was used during Operation Uphold Democracy. Seventeen Chinooks supported the United Nation Mission in Haiti (UNMIH) out of Port Au Prince Airport. The CH-47 was also used in multiple international humanitarian aid missions throughout the 1990s.
