Right from its inception, Coastal Command had always been the seemingly neglected service of our flying armed forces, caught between the Royal Navy clinging tightly to it's own air arm and the RAF, focussing on land-based aircraft, for fear of 'losing out' to the Navy.
As a consequence, CC was often poorly equipped and having to manage with sub-standard equipment, usually handed down to them, once the aircraft's usefulness had passed within the rest of the RAF.
That said, they played a vital role in WW2 and ever since, maintaining the safety and security of our seas.
