Trumpeter really is lousy when it comes to their BRDM 2 kits. This version is missing all of the radios that this version should have inside. All Trumpeter did was provide the same lame basic interior of the other 2 kits. I really dislike when a company slacks off like this. If your going to produce multiple versions, include the damn parts specific to that version. Big thumbs down on this kit. Aside from that its about time that they also stopped being lazy with their instructions and give the modeler information on the decals included and lack of paint callouts for everything but the exterior. Hobby boss is guilty of this too. For the prices paid they need to do better.

I wish eduard would re-release a ton of their out of print masking sets. I search everywhere online and these are nowhere to be found. Very frustrating. Its as bad as old upgrade sets from Cobra company. anyone know where I can get this set? Even cutting edge's version is MIA.

where the heck do we buy these? I need one bad, its ridiculous that of all the current Gaz Tiger kits, only the Zvezda version with the 30mm turret has this part. Any Combat Gaz should have the NBC system and the smoke dischargers. Its crazy how even Meng versions are lacking these parts.

This company just gets better an better. Picked up the Wittman late tiger kit, now they have the early with a new figure in a different pose too. Awesome! I just picked up their Late Panther which includes a metal barrel and options for $26 as well which is the standard price!!! You simply cannot beat that, especially with the metal barrel and other things included as well as the simple track assembly which is not a nightmare like older link and length tracks.

Absolutely!
I just went crazy with those kits, which are far better engineered, easier to assemble and full of options.
As an old modeller, I just met what I was searching.
Along with Tamiya, Takom is becoming my favorite brand!

Just ordered both kits separately, not the big box. In the last year I've bought at least 15 TAKOM kits. I got all of the Tigers, the 250s and a couple of Stugs and Hetzers. They are truly becoming one of my favorite manufacturers. PLUS, their prices are very good!

Anyone know if these diorama bases have been bought by another company and reissued since Verlinden folded? Its sad, I have a lot of their 1/35 detail sets and what I think is a copied resin street corner. There are some out of print bases on ebay but they cost a small fortune.

You can also get the same effect from using a square section tube like photo 28 in one of my albums:

Uncle nightshift has some videos on making bases entirely out of styrofoam board. He makes roads, houses, etc. very low cost and doesn't require a lot of fancy tooling.

Whats everyone's thoughts on this boom of 1/16 scale armor? I never thought this would catch on. I remember the old huge Tamiya kits (that cost a fortune) but now Takom and others are making tons. I guess if you have the shelf space its great and a lot easier to detail a much bigger scale. Especially of someone has aging eyes or other issues. I think they are neat but I would not have much space for a lot of them. I have had my eye on that Takom German Wiesel kit though as I have always loved that modern little tankette. If I ever do try 1/16 it would certainly be that vehicle.
25 January, 19:17

Oh I can see the appeal of 1/16 kits, they must be very impressive when built. Much too big for me to store and it would be a bit of a shock to the system to go from 1/72 to 1/16. 😄
I do know someone who is intending to gradually replace his collection with these larger kits even to the point he's willing to sell much of his current stash to fund it. He's building this kit at the moment and loving it.
Panzerjäger I B (Takom 1018, 1:16)
I am quite tempted by the Gecko Universal Carrier, which would also be quite a small model even in 1/16 scale, although the price is well above my budget. Personally I'm happy to stick with smaller scales.
1 26 January, 10:09

I have built the Pz 1 Ausf B and is a nice kit to build, lots of external detail but no internal detail whatsoever. I have purchased the Trumpeter 251/1 and is looks a nice kit.The Das Werks kit is a little bit more expensive but the level of detail is far superior.
1 26 January, 10:41

I like the idea of 1/16 especially for smaller subjects like light tanks. I'm not much of a German armor modeler, but hey, a Jagdtiger in 1/16 would be fun wouldn't it? If there was an M3 medium in 1/16 I'd buy it in a second. There's even some company that builds 1/8 scale metal armor kits. So far my only 1/16th subjects have been figures and a sea mine, but I do have some 3d print files I could scale to 1/16 within the envelope of my resin printer.
I just remembered I built a K-Wagen in 1/35. It's huge... building one in 1/16th... hmm. Maybe I need a larger resin printer.
2 31 January, 20:02

I Like 1/35 scale and doing dioramas. So if the space is already an issue, the 1/16 scale would be impossible.
Not that the building of this kits would not be more interesting, I think they would, but the higher prices issues is for sure a no no for me.
1 31 January, 20:12
January 30, 2025

Watch out for this brand. Its all made by 3d printers and each kit is sold in 2-4 scales, the kits are mediocre. Off-scale and lack a lot of detail. modelers should really be skeptical of a lot of the" no name" or "iffy" brands and copyright violation kits coming out of China recently. Ebay appears to be their main selling platform. The figures this company makes are also the worst I have seen. They may sell armor you have never seen before but there is a huge trade off for that. For instance a 1/35 scale figure with very obvious out of scale personal weapons that are way bigger than the figure and remind you of those green toy army men with very little detail. I have also noticed that many of their kits are copied work by artists on the Mesh 3d model markets. Its just complete junk. I would choose a horrible old Glenco or Lindberg kit over this stuff which really tells you how bad they are. A lot of stuff made by "Live Resin" and others is also being illegally copied and mass imported as well. I understand that some want a cheaper price, but these shady sellers should be banned from having their illegal goods imported and they should be shut down and arrested. Of course the home country could care less.
1 30 January, 21:31

Yeah but... I mean I got a 1/24 scale M2 Light Tank "Mae West" for $14 + $5 shipping on ebay from them. Hard to find a kit of that subject at any price. I agree the detail is lacking, but what the heck, it's an opportunity. My only regret is they didn't have it in 1/16.
I haven't seen the figures, the 3d prints of the armor models are ok, but as you point out, rather basic.
My standards are low because I build a lot of those horrible old Lindberg kits 🙂
30 January, 21:48

I imagine the source is here: free3d.com/nl/3d-mod..light-tank-5948.html - but I wouldn't pay $199 to print it myself. The design says it's royalty free, so you could use it as SSMODEL does, and do it commercially without breaking the copyright.

Anyone remember when DML/Dragon was like the most detailed top of the line 1/35 model company? Lately dragon has been re-issuing a lot of kits but prices on those old kits are higher than a lot of more detailed kits from new companies.Even if some of them have some add-on goodies included. $63 USD for the old sdkfz 250 kits for instance is just ridiculous. I doubt they will sell many at those prices. I still have 3 of their sdkfz 251 kits from the mid 2000's (with metal barrels, figures and other accessories) that I paid half that price for. They need to rethink their current pricing. That said I would finally like to get one of their long out of issue M3 halftrack kits now that they are back. About the only good one in town when compared to the ancient Tamiya kit.

gorby: Who knows? Brand loyalty is something I'd LOVE to enjoy in the modern age but nobody makes a full range of the kind of stuff I like to build, unfortunately. 😉
Ben: I forgot all about Lindberg! I built a mess of their stuff pretty early on. I remember the Me-163 was done in something like an hour. lol You're right the Revell stuff didn't fit very well at all & I STILL have issues with Italeri stuff from time to time.
1 29 January, 04:05

Speaking of shoddy Lindberg kits. To be honest. 2 years ago my spouse bought me that old horrible T-55 Lindberg kit. Its been re-released many times. Its got options in it to do the Israel tiran version. I have to admit that for a pretty low detail model company, this was not a bad kit. It actually includes the 105mm barrel for the Israel conversion and other bits. All I did was add a miniart working track link set to replace its horrid rubber band tracks that really do not fit and added better after market AA machine guns from the Academy MG set and stowage. With a good paint job and wash it easily can look almost like a current expensive Miniart brand T-55. Not a bad kit really at all. I actually built this kit once before when I was a teen but my first build didn't look even half as good as the one I did recently. We did not have all of these great aftermarket parts and paint washes, etc to make models look so realistic back in the early 90's. The old Lindberg T-80 and BMP-1 kits are not really that bad either and can be upgraded to look acceptable. I think those were the only 3 1/35 armor kits that company did.

So I have a question for you German Panzer fans out there (I count myself in that group) I plan to do a late war Panther G in the Muncheberg Panzer Div scheme with the distinctive sloped 3 color camo. I notice that this has been depicted in two ways. With the camo going over the top of the tank and wrapping the whole tank but on many models I also see the camo only on the sides of the tank and commanders cupola but the top of the tanks are one color only. Which is correct? There isnt exactly any period photos of the tops of these tanks to see what the tops were painted. One of those confusing situations. The kit instructions show the whole tank wrapped in the camo but a pic search only seems to show a lot of modelers go for the one color top of the tank (on the turret and the body) and the sides in the camo. An example is here in both ways

I just recently saw a bunch of what I call "elitist modeler" posts on a model site on the net. It seems that a group of modelers who think they are better than what they say are 99% of 1/35 scale modelers. They think Takom kits suck and that they are made for modelers who are lazy and want a fast and historically inaccurate model. What a crock of $%^#.
I may not look it but I have been in this hobby since the late 80's and I started out loving to build those classic ESCI 1/72 scale armor kits and others. I do try to be historically accurate in my builds and I do research before I build a kit too. But with that said, sue me because I love Takom kits and they just get better and better and in an age where most kits are skyrocketing in price, you can get a Takom kit for 50% less. I love them.

I've built a couple of Takom kits so far and found them great. Plenty more in the stash. As to accuracy, I take the view that it is what it is. I'm more about enjoying doing it that being a rivet counter. If others was to build to exact specs, that's fine, if that's what floats their boat (June 1942 version). They just need to accept that most of us do it for fun.
I've just doubled my age estimate for Mina. Must be all that Mr Surfacer!
2 25 January, 14:51

One thing about accuracy too. We can research to our hearts content. Now for example, if you are modeling some allied or german tank in WW2, pictures are very limited. You can find docs on when a unit was where during a specific time. You can see a few tanks and the paint schemes some used but not all. You can see numbers on some as well as unit marks but in most cases you can't. Pictures are limited and so tons of speculation from B&W photos as to what the real color of the vehicle was. For instance like Rommels halftrack. People have argued for decades if his sdkfz 250 in Africa was just panzer grey with some dunkelgelb splotched all over, or if it was some other color. In most cases we have no pictures of a vehicle from the other side too. Like Wittmans last tank 007. Many people model his tank with the unit crest on the front left face of the tank when in photos it seems to me 2nd SS tigers had the unit crest on the right, like his older 205 tank. The command tank antennas have also been a point of speculation for years. Regardless, you could go insane trying to be as accurate as possible and still be off the mark. Even the pros in this hobby I think are off the mark sometimes and it cannot be verified either way. You just try to model what you think is correct as best you can or just go for a build that really could never be deemed accurate or not and that's the best anyone can do. I think most everything is speculative and like all of you said, we should enjoy the hobby and not pick apart others work. I think social media in many cases, like everything else, has made a lot of people become armchair generals on every subject and ridicule has gone off the rails (be it talk of hobbies or anything else). Productive advice though is usually always welcome!

I got this kit for Christmas. I think its the most accurate Wittmann version out there. Has decals for all 4 tanks he used in France and has both types of antennas. Remember 007 only had the right and center antenna, the left one was not on the last tank he commanded so make sure you remember that if you decide to do the tank he was KIA in. Takom is really knocking them out of the park and at a very low price.

Just a small tip, I know some people spray a whole model gloss before applying decals but that's totally unnecessary and a waste of product. I mask off sections where decals are going to be applied and gloss coat those areas. I then apply decals and seal it up with a matte finish. Works great.
