I've been looking forward to this build for a long time - and really, the kit seems to be of excellent quality. I will be careful to live up to this quality!

Looking forward to this project. The kit is really nice, only downside is the rotorhead assembly to the fuselage....
14 March 2022, 15:04

I am very pleased with your interest, mates! Hajo, I can now agree with your analysis - I have just closed the fuselage halves - indeed a strange "solution" for the rotor head!
14 March 2022, 15:18

The "Huey Cobra" grows- with a whole lot of etched parts from Eduard plus the air intakes from Brengun. Rarely have I seen an aircraft more deserving of the name "Shark" than the AH-1 in its current state of construction!
19 March 2022, 08:48

I'm glad to hear it! Tomorrow we will prime with paint; I am curious to see how that will look.
19 March 2022, 19:38

Now a bit of colour comes into play: after pre-shading, I applied a shade of "interior green" to bring some life into the monotonous "olive drab". This will be applied tomorrow.
20 March 2022, 18:44

Well. I am going to do Camo D1, "Wretched Mildred".... if you mean the colour: Gunze H 52
20 March 2022, 20:17

Actually I was curious of the used colour, but I´m also happy to hear which markings you are going to use. 😉
21 March 2022, 11:59

Looking really nice, the camo paintjob looks intriguing! I am curious how it will turn out with decals and all.
21 March 2022, 12:50

The "Huey Cobra" now wears the OD over everything.... but the whole thing still looks a bit flat. I am therefore happy when I can liven up the surfaces with black surfaces.
22 March 2022, 19:30

In the photo, the OD actually loses some of its contrast, so that it looks a little paler than in reality; this is probably one reason. However, the colour tone itself is close enough
22 March 2022, 19:41

The "Cobra" is slowly but surely turning into the home straight. Finally, some kit parts were replaced - such as the rotor blade attachment; let's see how it turns out....

Klasse Ding - ich habe mir aus Lingen auch eine AH-1G Cobra "Over Vietnam with M-35 Gun System" Special Hobby No. SH72076 mitgebracht 🙂
30 March 2022, 16:08

Looks grate so far. I made the same model, it was a pleasure to make it. I opted for the same decals 😉
30 March 2022, 18:05

Thank you very much for your interest and your answers! I'm really enjoying this kit right now, a really fine thing!
Well, to be more precise: I was able to finish the construction so far this morning; tomorrow I would like to show a few quick pictures of it.
31 March 2022, 09:16

I can show you Special Hobby's completed "Huey Cobra". For the finer parts like the door closers, the pitot tube or the rod steps on the runners I used metal wire from my own collection. The rotor axle was also replaced; this is now also made of metal. Eduard's etched parts set can also be recommended for this beautiful kit. By the way: in some pictures there are two pilot helmets from "Reed Oak" on the left stub wing. These are of extraordinary quality, helmet interior and micro included - that is very delicate in this scale!
31 March 2022, 16:20

Thank you for the motivating feedback, mates! I'm already looking forward to the 32 ICM AH-1G, but this build was fun nonetheless.
Spanjaard, the two "HGU-56/P" helmets are just a nice gimmick; having recently afforded a couple of Reed Oak's really excellent figures, I've co-ordered these helmets for upcoming 72e helicopter projects.

so i guess it is the 1/72 version of Half in helmet bag HGU-56/P ..rder) (Reedoak 480040, 1:48) thanks

Wieder eine schöne Abwechslung in bester Ausführung! Du "kannst" wirklich alles was fliegt, Roland!
1 April 2022, 07:50

I really appreciate your comments, thank you for that! It's highly motivating!
That's right, Spanjaard, I'll put in a link to the helmets, they are also available "solo".

thanks Roland. i have added it to the database HGU-56/P US Army helicopter ..elmet (REEDOAK 720011, 1:72)

Roland, you have done a superb on #189 "Wretched Mildred". I was a crew chief in F Troop 4th Cav. #189 was the last Cobra that I crewed before being discharged Sept. 1971. My only issue is that the G model Cobras had blue tinted canopies. Your 1/72nd scale Cobra looks fantastic. The previous crew chief was Keith Nichols, and Wretched Mildred was named after the pilot's grandmother. I painted the name on. Gary S.
7 July 2023, 14:17

Gary, this must be one of the ultimate ways of being praised: the original Crewchief finds interest and gives a good report card! In all my proud modesty, I am incredibly happy - and I say thank you!
7 July 2023, 20:04

I'm just very happy that our Cobras get the recognition they deserve. Can I email you some pics of #189. When I arrived Cu Chi for my first tour of duty and saw that the Cobras had shark teeth I thouht, Wow I'm in a Flying Tigers outfit.
Gary S.

Thank you, Gary and Rui! This is getting better and better! Gary, with pleasure I send you in PM my email address; I am looking forward with really great interest to anything you want to share. I have a 1/32nd scale AH-1G on my model kit pile with all the etched/ reson parts that Special Hobby includes. Your information can certainly help to make it even more realistic and detailed. Thank you very much already!
